Today is the fourth Sunday of Lent and we continue our journey to the cross. Our reading is taken from Luke 15:1-3, 11-32.
We love the idea of a God who is merciful towards us and forgiving of our sins and failures, but sometimes we also want a God who carries out swift discipline towards those whom we deem deserving of judgement. Of all the stories Jesus told, this parable is the most beautiful, enduring, and challenging. It upsets our ideas of how God treats people and it pushes us to change our attitudes towards others. It's a snapshot of the Gospel which is good news for both the religious and irreligious alike.
