Sunday Service - 10 April 2022

LIVE SERVICE

On this 6th Sunday of Lent, also known as Palm Sunday, we are joined by guest preacher, Geoff Quinlan.

Palm Sunday marks the start of Holy Week, leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and culminating in his resurrection over Easter weekend. On this day we look back at Jesus’ “Triumphal Entry” into Jerusalem, when masses of people welcomed him as their promised Messiah - they sang songs of rejoicing and honoured him by laying down their cloaks or cutting off palm branches to lay in the path before him at the entrance to the city - thinking that he had come to deliver them from Roman oppression. But Jesus came to bring a very different kind of deliverance: a deliverance from sin’s oppressive rule over our hearts and its consequence of the eternal death of our souls and separation from God at the end of our mortal lives. And so in their ignorance, the same people who sang his praise at the start of the week, would be among those calling out for his death just a few days later.

Geoff will take us through Palm Sunday and Holy Week with an aim to interpret these events from the standpoint of Jesus, rather than our own, and show us how looking at things from Christ’s perspective points us to a different way of living.

Today is the fifth Sunday of Lent and we continue our journey to the cross. Our reading is taken from Philippians 3:4-14.

We value so many things in this world. Many of them are good things and gifts from God himself. But in light of Jesus, Paul considers everything else as rubbish. What is it about Jesus that makes him of such infinite value?
